Two new hotels add around 400 guest beds to Werfenweng
On the site of the old Hotel Hochthron, a JUFA hotel and an aparthotel with a large underground car park are going up, taking the village from 2,000 to about 2,400 guest beds.
There has been a building site at the entrance to Werfenweng for some time. Two large new properties are replacing the old Hotel Hochthron: a new JUFA hotel and an aparthotel. According to ORF Salzburg (July 2025), both are due to open in spring 2026. An underground car park with around 300 spaces is being built beneath them.
More beds for a small village
The two new buildings raise the number of guest beds in Werfenweng from about 2,000 to roughly 2,400. The projects were not uncontroversial. A few years ago there was opposition in the village, as many people felt the new hotels were too big. Green land that had been included in the sale had to go back to its previous owners, because the buyer was not a farmer.
The lift company sees an opportunity
Christian Ehrensberger, managing director of Bergbahnen Werfenweng, the local lift company, says the extra beds are needed. In recent years more hotels closed than opened. The summer season is also becoming more and more important, and as a high plateau close to the city of Salzburg, Werfenweng is well placed for it.
More and more guests already take the lift up to the Bischlinghöhe in summer. Local businesses are therefore planning more activities on the mountain, including mountain golf and an upgraded summer toboggan run.
