Werfenweng is still Salzburg's "youngest" municipality
With an average age of 39.4 years, Werfenweng once again has the youngest population in the province, according to the state statistics office's population report.
No municipality in the province of Salzburg has a younger population on average than Werfenweng. That is the finding of the population report by Salzburg's state statistics office, which ORF Salzburg covered in November 2024. The average age in the Pongau village is 39.4 years.
The average age is rising in Werfenweng as well, but only slightly: by 0.3 years compared with the previous year. That doesn't change its top position.
The oldest communities are in the Lungau
At the other end of the table is Ramingstein in the Lungau district, with an average age of 47.7 years. The year before, Mauterndorf, also in the Lungau, had the highest figure. More details from the report:
- Großarl, also in the Pongau, has the highest share of children under three.
- Hintersee (Flachgau) and Fusch (Pinzgau) have the highest share of children under 14.
- Thomatal (Lungau) has the highest share of teenagers.
The province grows only through migration
At the start of 2024, 571,479 people lived in the province of Salzburg. All of the growth came from migration. For the first time since 1918, deaths outnumbered births.
