Anton-Proksch-Haus named "Hut of the Year 2026"
The Naturfreunde's volunteer-run self-catering hut at 1,585 metres in the Tennengebirge has won the federal organisation's award. It is the first time the title has gone to Salzburg.
The Anton-Proksch-Haus above Werfenweng is the Naturfreunde's "Hut of the Year 2026". The national Naturfreunde organisation, an Austrian hiking and outdoor club, gave the award to the Salzburg branch's self-catering hut. It is the first time the title has gone to a Naturfreunde hut in Salzburg.
The award was presented in July at the hut itself, at 1,585 metres above sea level, by federal chair Andreas Schieder and federal managing director Günther Abraham.
Volunteers are the main reason
According to the Naturfreunde, the deciding factor was the commitment behind the scenes: the hut is run entirely by a volunteer team. Sophia Burtscher, who chairs the Naturfreunde in Salzburg, describes it as a "place where people meet" and much more than a mountain base.
She says the success was only possible through cooperation with the tourist board, the municipality of Werfenweng and the lift company. The aim is to develop the hut further as a place for the community.
