Elmaualm: a hut on the south side of the Tennengebirge since around 1860
The Elmaualm at 1,533 metres is run by volunteers from the Salzburger Bergsportclub, who take turns week by week. The round trip from the Wengerau takes about three and a half hours.
High above Werfenweng, at 1,533 metres above sea level, stands the Elmaualm. The mountain hut is on the south side of the Tennengebirge, below the Werfener Hochthron and above the tree line. From its sun terrace you can see across the cliffs of the Tennengebirge to the Hochkönig and the main ridge of the Alps.
Run by volunteers
The hut is run by the Salzburger Bergsportclub, a mountain sports club. Members take on hut duty as volunteers and rotate every week. The menu features regional dishes and traditional home cooking.
The Elmaualm was built around 1860. It has been carefully adapted for use as a mountain hut but has kept its original character, including a parlour with a tiled stove. Under the roof there is a dormitory with room for up to 20 people.

From the Wengerau, the route passes the Wengerau-Alm and the Gamsblickalm. After about 500 metres, a steep footpath branches off towards the Elmaualm. For the way back, take the same path or the forest road, which is easier on the knees.
According to the tourist board, the hut is open daily with no rest day until mid-October in the 2026 season.
